HMCS IRONSIDE The IRONSIDE represented a new class of vessel, adopted largely out of necessity—the areas surrounding the shipyards had been stripped of timber, leaving scrap iron as the only viable material. Unfortunately, while the hull was updated, the engines were not. As a result, the ship could only manage a top speed of just 6 knots, while consuming an astonishing 40 tons of coal per day.
