Our Lady of Midwives (Francie McGlynn)

This assemblage shows a female figure whose body is a piece of dried tree fungus that has been glazed. It is from a tree that stood in front of the maternity hospital where I was born. When the building was demolished and, sadly, the tree cut down, a friend took the fungus home and forgot it was in her garage for years. She gave it to me and as I handled it I thought of how many newborns must have passed that tree. "Our Lady Of Midwives" honours and blesses all doctors, nurses and midwives.
