Collards (cells magnified x300) (Karen Taylor)

The inspiration for this painting comes from looking at my home-grown collards through a microscope. I was looking at the plant's stems. They have structures made of longer cells that act like straws, drawing water up through the stems. I loved the contrast between the cells in this water highway and its surroundings.
