Celestial Music of the Pure Land 净土天乐 (Yu Ding)

This work is adapted from the celebrated Western Pure Land Transformation in Mogao Cave 321 of Early Tang period (7-8th Century). Set against a blue celestial sky, drifting clouds, falling flowers, and floating instruments evoke the harmonious beauty of Amitābha Buddha’s paradise. The self-playing heavenly instruments symbolize the purity, joy, and spiritual perfection of the Western Pure Land, representing one of the most poetic visions in Dunhuang mural art in a surprisingly 'modern' style.
